Summary: Elliot, a fairly newly licensed veterinarian who works in an upscale clinic where she thoroughly enjoys her wonderful, if not exhausting, job–though most of the time the pages of her diary feel the same day after day now–that is until the fateful moment she entered Exam Room 5 to treat a patient she’d never seen before–and walked (ran) away wondering if her life would be the same again.

Thanks so much for your update on exam room 5! I absolutely love that story and was wondering if it’s okay if I ask a question about your oc? Is she bilingual and if she is which language is she more fluent in? I’ve read the story as if they are all speaking Japanese, is that correct? I was also curious how would her mom have pronounced her name? Is it the same way Yamada would say it in the last chapter? Sorry, just want to have the sound right in my head when I’m reading it!! 😘♡

Well, to answer the questions let me give you a bit of background on Elliot’s family. Her mother is 100% Japanese in both blood and citizenship. Her father was an American, but went through the kan’i kika (simplified naturalization) process once he’d married her mother.

They took HIS name as their family name, thus her parents no longer went by her Mother’s family name, but a new name was recorded for their family.

In Japanese their family name looks like this:

Meadows: メドース, Medoosu, pronounced [ meh dough sue ]

I used ‘dough’ instead of ‘doh’ here to emphasize that the  ー means the o sound is extended another beat, and saying ‘dough’ versus ‘doh’ out loud does that for you haha (in case you were wondering!)

So her name, they don’t do middle names in Japan, so her name is really recorded as “Elliot”, and it looks like this:

Elliot: エリエット, Erietto, pronounced [ eh lee eh TOE ]

Now, given the nature of fluent Japanese speakers accents–this is kinda tricky because the part I am listing as ‘LEE’ is too simplistic…the sound is almost like a d with your tongue touching the top of your mouth and an l together. If you say it out loud you  might be able to see what I mean by that.

Elliot is bilingual, she speaks both Japanese and English (both FLUENTLY!). That said, her main/primary/default language is Japanese, as she was born there and attended school there and despite having an American father, she is 100% a Japanese citizen via jus sanguinis, and is 50% race wise, though she considers herself to be 100% Japanese period with no difference–even if society doesn’t view it that way.

She has a fairly good sense of humor when people ask her ‘where are you from’ or ‘how long are you staying in Japan’, or ‘when are you heading home?’

She has been taught English from her father, and her Mother only knows a basic amount of English, though she generally only communicates in Japanese. I DO think that since her father’s name is Elliot also, combined with the desire she had to have a daughter with ‘an American name’ her Mom would likely have worked very, very hard to pronounce her name 100% the way an American would…and thus, her Mom would literally say “Elliot” almost exactly as we do, and would not have the ‘toe’ on the end even though that is how her name is recorded.

Ryosuke, however, would pronounce it the way I’ve said above, and would have added the ‘toe’ onto the end–and yes, it wouldn’t be ‘normal’ as far as propriety and society standards for him to have called her by her first name casually like that. That faux pas is addressed in the next chapter haha

Finally, seriously, I am absolutely NOT fluent or even basic in Japanese, so this is what I have gotten from my friend who actually did study it (and the nice thing is I had already gotten this sorted before you asked!)–so it’s entirely possible that different dialects would effect the way the name is pronounced, but I think this is very close to the most common way–and I did my best to try to explain in a way that anyone who doesn’t speak the language could potentially pronounce it out loud!

Thank you SO MUCH for your question and I’m super sorry for talking about my characters like real people lol I can’t help it, haha I map out such a broad and compelling backstory for all of them it’s not hard for me to talk as if they’re real. (they are in my mind after all!)
